Make a Memory Box
|
|
I’m sure you’ve many special memories of spending time with the
person in your family who has Alzheimer's disease. I have a ton of great
memories of Gram. Here’s how you can make a Memory
Box so you don’t forget those wonderful times:
Find
a box (an old shoebox works well) and decorate it however you wish (e.g.,
ribbon, stickers, art, postcards, fabric scraps, wallpaper, buttons,
etc.)
-
Fill the box with at least five unique things that will help you to
remember those special times. Examples could be an old coin, photograph, letter/card/postcard,
piece of jewellery (necklace or broach), watch, medal, fishing
hook, theatre ticket stub, scarf, button, pressed flowers, etc.
You might want to challenge yourself to include items that will stimulate
all 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste). For
example, Gram caught a baseball when we were at a Blue Jays game. She
gave me the baseball as a keepsake or souvenir. Her Memory Box includes
the baseball, a ticket stub to the game, the lyrics to the song “Take
Me Out to the Ball Game”, a package of peanuts, and a single serving
packet of mustard (what’s a hot dog without mustard?).
- The items in the box will serve as a reminder for both you and your
family member of the times you shared. Take the box out occasionally
and examine the contents with the person. Don’t forget to add
things to remind you of the new memories you’re also making.

A Memory Box honours the life of the person
with Alzheimer's disease in a lasting and personal way
