Thumbs Up

The DoRIGHTERS want to give a great big:

THUMBS UP!

To all boys and girls who protect their
‘coconuts’ when they:

  1. BUCKLE UP - Statistics show that seat belts can decrease the chance of sustaining a serious injury in a traffic accident by as much as 50 per cent. Whether in a car, truck, or airplane, your seat belt helps prevent you from connecting with the windshield/seat in front of you and it keeps you from being thrown out of a vehicle.

  2. WEAR A LID – For the five-year period from 1998-2003 in Saskatchewan, 10 cyclists died and more than 1,200 were injured. Whether biking, skateboarding, or skating, wear an approved helmet that meets one of the following standards: CSA, ASTM, CPSC, Snell, ANSI. Consider wearing protective headgear when riding horseback and skiing as well.

According to the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute, only cycling helmets can withstand the type of impact that may result from a cycling accident. The chance of having your skull fractured is reduced if you’re wearing a cycling helmet because it distributes the blow over a larger area and minimizes the violent movement of the brain within the skull.

  3. SAY ‘NO’ TO ILLEGAL DRUGS - There’s no question that drugs alter the functioning of the brain. In some cases they may change brain function permanently. Why take the chance of damaging your brain for the rest of your life?

CJ says it best in his poem:

    Illegal drugs scramble your brain
‘Stay Away’ is the adult refrain
Don’t believe them? Talk to users
Drugs have turned them into losers
Want to get high the natural way?
    Love life and yourself
    Each and every day
    Be real

  4. LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP – This is sound advice no matter if you’re around water or not. Protect your brain and spinal cord by checking the water’s depth and making sure that there are no rocks or other debris below its surface. Avoid horseplay and running around swimming pools. Absolutely never throw someone into the water head first.

  5. LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE YOU CROSS THE STREET – You’re probably thinking this is a no-brainer. Of course we look both ways before we cross the street at uncontrolled intersections and we obey traffic lights. But checking for traffic needs to occur whenever and wherever we cross the street because there isn’t much of a contest when a child is pitted against a vehicle that weighs anywhere from 1045 kgs/2300 lbs to 1589 kgs/3499 lbs.
