Children face special problems in understanding and coping when a parent or grandparent, friend or neighbour, behave in ways that they do not understand.
The Children's Education Program was developed to educate children about Alzheimer's disease. The program stresses the importance of maintaining relationships with people who have Alzheimer's disease and gives children the tools and advice they need to better interact with people who have been diagnosed. The long term goal of the program is to create a generation of young people who are better educated, more compassionate and better prepared to confront the increased challenges Alzheimer's disease will place on us personally, as a community, and as a society.
The Children's Education Program is a no-cost, in-class program for Grade Three students designed for delivery in the public and separate school systems by trained volunteers. With ties to the Social Relationships Strand of the Elementary Health Education Curriculum, each one hour presentation includes educational materials such as interactive learning tools, activity sheets, and information that students can take home and share with their parents and family members.
For more information on the Children's Education program please contact Bobbi Krushkowski, Public Education Coordinator at (306) 949-4141 or 1-800-263-3367. You can also contact Bobbi by e-mail at bkrushkowski@alzheimer.sk.ca
Another component of the Children's Education Program is the Just 4 Kids section on this web site. The section features facts about Alzheimer's disease and the brain, information on how children can help someone who has Alzheimer's disease, interactive audio books, activities, games and puzzles. People with Alzheimer's disease require specialized care
because of the unique nature of the disease. The Alzheimer
Society developed the Guidelines for Care to address this.
The Enhancing Care Program was developed to help implement
these guidelines. This assessment and goal-setting process
is designed specifically for long-term care facilities.
A trained Alzheimer Society staff member will partner with
your facility to help assess your caregiving skills and
to create a forum where staff can share their ideas and
expertise. All staff learn to use tools to evaluate what
they are doing well and where improvement is needed.
- Alzheimer Society staff will provide 8 - 10 hours of
on-site facilitation at no charge
- Your facility must be an organizational member of the
Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan
- Your facility is responsible for travel, accommodation
and meal expenses for Alzheimer Society Staff and any
other staffing costs associated with the program
- You must purchase an Enhancing Care Binder

The Virtual Dementia Tour provides a hands-on experience
that simulates what it might be like to have Alzheimer's
disease or a related dementia. The Virtual Dementia Tour
is a great training tool for those working in long-term
care facilities, private care and home care.
Alzheimer Society staff deliver this program with a Train
the Trainer approach. Facilities must purchase their own
Virtual Dementia Tour Kit. The Virtual Dementia Tour™ is developed and licensed by Second Wind Dreams.
The one-day training fee of $300.00 includes assistance
with organizing, setting-up and implementing all aspects
of the Virtual Dementia Tour.
